Briggs Library Associates Juried Art Award
The time is now and the place is Morris. Matthew Sheets, a senior Studio Art and Political Science major, has won a Briggs Library Associates art award for his photography piece Time and Place.
From far away the artwork appears to be a series of black and white lines and spaces. Look closer. There are close to 20 images captured in the piece, all of them from campus and the surrounding community.
"I try to make abstraction out of everyday household items," Sheets explained.
The artist rewound film from an analog film and then overlapped the images. Later a digital process was used to make it look like one continious frame. The end result is a snapshot of how Morris feels at night.
Besides working in photography Sheets also enjoys creating sculptures. In the future, he would like to work in arts advocacy.
"There is always a need for someone to advocate on behalf of artists," he said.
