Authors Joshua Whitehead and Gwen Nell Westerman will do a public reading of their work and take questions. Copies of their books will be available for sale before and after the readings. Refreshments will be served.

Westerman is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota Oyate and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. She is the co-author of Mni Sota Makoce: The Land of the Dakota which won a 2013 Minnesota Book Award, and a 2014 Hognander Minnesota History Award. Her newest book of poetry is called Songs, Blood Deep. She is the current poet laureate of Minnesota.

Whitehead (he/him) is a Two-Spirit, Oji-nêhiyaw member of Peguis First Nation. He is the author of full-metal indigiqueer (Talonbooks 2017) which was shortlisted for the inaugural Indigenous Voices Award and the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry. He is also the author of Jonny Appleseed (Arsenal Pulp Press 2018) which was long shortlisted for the Indigenous Voices Award, the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Amazon Canada First Novel Award, the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, and won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction and the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction. His newest book, Making Love With the Land, is due out from the University of Minnesota in November.
